I used abreva for years—before I came to my senses. My cold sore would absorb the medicine creating a yellowish scab over my cold sore. It looks disgusting. The life cycle would still be at LEAST a week when the scab would eventually fall off and a bright red raw area would be left which would again have to scab over before healing. DO NOT USE THIS. There are far better ways to get rid of cold sores in a timely manner. ie DMSO creme and ice when it starts…if it has already broken the surface get an advil or aleve pill wet it down some and hold it on there for a few minutes it helps tremendously. take a few l-lysine and crack one of those open get it wet and hold it on your lip. it improves almost immediately
I’ve had cold sores in the past, usually 1 or 2 outbreaks a year. I just woke up last Wednesday (day 1) and had a swollen, tingly upper lip–yup, another outbreak. I went and picked up a tube of Abreva at a local drugstore in a moment of desperation on Thursday (day 2), as I’d never tried it before, but figured since it was around $20, it must do something. The swelling was noticeably better after 12 hours! By Saturday evening (day 4) all that was left of the outbreak was a red spot where the blister had been, with no more weeping or swelling. This stuff REALLY WORKS!! No, it’s not a cure, but it made my outbreak last only 4 days compared to a week or longer just trying to get by on OTC lip moisturizers or Neosporin (to prevent a secondary bacterial infection). I’d definitely recommend this stuff to anyone with cold sores. Now that I have my little tube, I’ll be ready to try it immediately when the next outbreak starts. A miracle in a tube and worth the price! Remember to wash hands before and after applying the cream. Rub it in gently and the white will not be noticeable at all.
I have tried Abreva probably half a dozen times over the years hoping to diminish and curtail the length of time cold sores last, and each time the outbreak has been either unaffected OR seems to last even longer! Obviously I’m the idiot for trying the same thing over and over, but I kept hoping that it was MY fault or something – (like “maybe I need to use more at night,” or “perhaps if I start using it at the first tingle”). Well I was sorely mistaken. (wow, bad joke).
I have found that CARMEX works for me, and in some cases will actually stop the cold sore from even breaking the skin. It has a bunch of antiseptic ingredients as well as stuff that relieves dryness (which often leads to cold sores), so it’s a great preventive product as well. And with CARMEX priced at $5 for 3 tubes on Amazon… I’ll never look at Abreva with ignorant hope again.
As far as I can tell, my mother passed on the dreaded cold sore virus to me at birth.
She always had them when I was growing up, I’ll blame her.
Anywho, nothing else I have ever tried has had much effect on cold sores.
This product is the first thing that has actually worked.
I actually apply a small amount as prevention when I suspect I may have an out break.
This usually happens after being outdoors on a mountain bike and getting lots of hard exercise in the sun.
I suppose I either weaken my immune system from all the hard exercise or it could be the exposure to sun.
I wear lots of sunscreen and Carmex lip balm that has sunscreen, but the outbreaks always happen a couple days after being outdoors for long periods and getting lots of exercise.
That’s the bad news, the good news this stuff actually works and seems to stop the cold sore dead in it’s tracks before it can develop into something more serious.
This product is amazing. It really works. I tried it for the first time several months ago and it worked. Since then, I left in on my first aid box. Two days ago I started to feel a cold sore appearing and I immediately rushed to apply Abreva. I applied it late in the evening and the following day the cold sore was barely noticeable. I continued to apply and the following day it was unnoticeable. I still feel the sore but it wasn’t noticeable. This is the best product for cold sores. I highly recommended it.
