The previous version, 790CC was $180-$190 at Amazon until it was sold out and this new one (790CC-4) is currently $269.99. That is a $80 – $90 premium (or 42% – 50% more expensive)…

Trivial fact, the MSRP of the regular 790CC was also $269.99.

The only differences I can see are:

    1) Different color scheme (black/silver)

    2) Variable settings (called personalization modes)

    3) New foil (OptiFoil)?

I cannot even tell if it is a new foil since the replacement head cassette part for the 790CC-4 (also known as type: 5692) is the 70S. The regular 790CC (type 5671) also uses the 70S…

By the way the part number for the 70S is 65671768.

My sources are the use/instruction manual for the 790CC-4 states 70S and the Braun Canada service website for the 790CC-4 also states 70S.

Just a fyi, you cannot find the 790CC-4 on the Braun US website since they have not updated it yet…

So right now it seems like there are only two differences between the 790CC-4 and 790CC, but here is a curve ball:

The Braun global website (or any Braun website with the 790CC-4) shows there is a difference between the OptiFoil and Smart Foil:

    [...]

However (yes there is more), the Amazon Germany website shows the Braun 70S as having the OptiFoil technology… The thing is the Amazon Germany Braun 70S product page was created on January 1, 2007. I guess they can update the product page anytime they want.

Could it be that the Braun 70S will eventually get an update with the OptiFoil or is OptiFoil the same thing as the Smart Foil?

Regardless I am putting my money on a negligible difference between OptiFoil and Smart Foil.

Unless there is something else I am missing, $80-$90 is quite a bit more for what you get (only two or *maybe* three differences!). One of them being a simple change in colors…

They did not even improve the trimmer!

I’ve had a top of the line Braun 8000 series (8595) for about 6+ years. It just started to fail recently – I didn’t feel like trying another replacement foil/blade and after over 2,000 shaves – I guess it’s hard to complain. If this new one lasts the same duration, then it will be well worth the money for just over $0.12 per day plus consumables (cleaning solution & replacement foils).

I opened this new shaver morning (790-CC4), charged it, and started using it. I like the variable setting (3-steps) for mild to intense. I like the feel of it and although the display is less sophisticated than my old one, this one might be more practical in usage. It has a Li-Ion battery and so is a bit lighter, and seems well-constructed.

The real test is the shave – and this is the best result I’ve ever had from shaving with an electric. On rare occasions I’ll use a blade for a special occasion and a blade is usually much closer than most electrics – but I’ve been okay with a slight sacrifice using an electric in the past. My face right now feels so shockingly smooth, I’d swear I shaved with a blade this morning… So the proof is in the pudding – and I’d wholeheartedly recommend this shaver if you’re partial to electrics.
